Kidville Maker Studio: DIY Birthday Banner

Hello MAKERS!

No birthday party is complete without a Happy Birthday Banner! We celebrate hundreds of birthdays at Kidville and have witnessed a range of styles from store bought to custom made. If you find yourself lusting after a custom made Etsy banner but cannot get yourself to spend $50 on a banner, we got you covered!

Before beginning your project, decide what you want your banner to say! This will determine how many flags you will be making. Add up your number of flags and tack on an extra four if you wish to add themed images on the ends of your banner (i.e. Paw Patrol, Dora, Peppa Pig..etc..)

STEP 1:
Using your ruler, measure your paper into rectangles
4″ x 6″ (If you’re using construction paper, you can
fit 3 to a page)

STEP 2:
On the 4″ end of the ruler, measure 2″ across and
1 inch into the flag. MAKE A MARK! You will now
trace triangles as seen in diagram 1 & 2.

STEP 3:
Cut out the flags! Make sure to remove the triangles
at the bottom to form a fun banner shape!

STEP 4:
Using a 3″ diameter cup (check your cupboard!)
trace circles around a contrasting colored paper.
This will be the background to your printed letters.

STEP 5:
Cut out the circles and glue them onto your flags in the center.
Measure or eyeball it to make sure you are pasting them
at the same height on each flag

STEP 6:
Embellish the top of each flag using a washi tape!
Ours is just a straight line but get creative! You can use
different colors, thicknesses and make stripes, borders..etc..

STEP 7.
Print out your banner letters and any images you want –
make sure they are sized appropriately based on the circle
punch you are using. PUNCH AWAY!

STEP 8:
Glue your letters in the center of the background circles.

STEP 9:
Adjust your hole punch so that the punches will be on the
far left and far right corners of each flag. Punch each flag.

STEP 10.
Print out your banner letters and any images you want –
make sure they are sized appropriately based on the circle
punch you are using. PUNCH AWAY!

STEP 11:
Hang up your banner for all to admire! Get ready to PARTY!
